Sustainability Workshop for Livelihood Support in Pilang

On July 16, 2025, Yayasan Tambuhak Sinta (YTS) held a Sustainability Workshop in Pilang Village as the ACIAR-supported livelihood program came to an end. The event brought together local government, a rubber farmer group, NGOs, and private sector partners to reflect on three years of working together, discuss the challenges, and discuss how the community can strengthening livelihoods and protecting the peatland.
One rubber farmer shared how our program helped them learn to produce dry clean rubber and gain access to the factory. At first, only four people joined and many were unsure. As they saw higher prices and better results, more farmers joined. Now the group manages their own production records, sells to the factory independently, and encourages other farmers to adopt the dry rubber method.
As the project closes, the discussion turned to the next phase. Participants highlighted practical needs such as maintaining rubber quality, involving more farmers, and exploring new livelihood options suited to local conditions. Everyone agreed that collaboration among the community, local government, NGOs, and the private sector will be key to growing future economic opportunities while maintaining the peatland. Participants also discussed the importance of linking these efforts with formal village planning, so new initiatives and partnerships can be included in official development priorities and support peatland management for the long term.
The workshop created space for stakeholders to connect, share ideas, and explore opportunities for future collaboration. Looking ahead, the sustainability of livelihoods and peatland management in Pilang will rely on strong partnerships and the continued commitment of everyone involved.
