Bapak Subuh

Bapak Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo was born at dawn on 22 June 1901, near Semarang in Central Java, Indonesia. At age 24, Bapak Subuh received a revelation from Almighty God in the form of a ball of light which entered his body. This event caused a spontaneous receiving within him, which he later called the spiritual exercise of Subud.

Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo is therefore the founding member of the spiritual association of Subud. After Subud reached the West in the late 1950s, Bapak traveled widely, transmitting the Subud contact around the world. Ten years later, the international Subud organisation was well established in more than 70 countries.

Bapak urged Subud members to start social enterprises to provide for their own welfare and to fund charitable efforts such as schools, hospitals and other social & humanitarian projects. To this end, he himself created a company & constructed an office building in Jakarta which was named the PT S.Widjojo Centre.

In 1980, Bapak went to Kalimantan, and negotiated government concessions for numerous enterprises to fund Subud’s future charitable work. Development of these enterprises in Kalimantan continues today for the benefit of not only the local people, but all of mankind. 

Where Bapak walked into the jungle in November, 1980, the Subud community of Rungan Sari was born and grows today near Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan.
